10mm TMT Bar Weight, Price, Uses, and Size Guide (2026)

10mm TMT Bar Weight, Price, Uses, and Size

“Before buying 10mm TMT bars, knowing how much they weigh, how much they cost and where they are commonly used can help you plan your purchase more effectively.”

10mm TMT bars are widely used in construction and may be specified for slabs, beams, lintels, staircases and other reinforced concrete applications. However, the required quantity, grade and application should always be determined according to the structural design.

This guide covers the important details buyers need to know, including 10mm TMT bar weight, weight per piece, bars per ton, size, dimensions, price per kg, price per bar, uses and grades.

What Is a 10mm TMT Bar?

TMT stands for Thermo-Mechanically Treated. A TMT bar is a ribbed reinforcement bar used in reinforced concrete. The “10mm” refers to its nominal diameter.

TMT bars have a hard outer surface and a softer, ductile core, which helps them handle both load and structural movement. The ribs on the surface improve bonding with concrete.

The 10mm bar sits between the lighter 8mm and the heavier 12mm sizes. It is commonly used as main reinforcement in light slabs and as stirrups or ties in larger members, depending on the structural design.

10mm TMT Bar Weight Per Meter

The weight of a 10mm TMT bar is approximately 0.617 kg per meter.

This comes from the standard formula for steel bars (see the calculation section below). A standard 12-meter bar weighs about 7.40 kg.

Actual weight can vary slightly because IS 1786 permits a tolerance on nominal mass. Always confirm the weight with your supplier’s test and billing documents.

How to Calculate 10mm TMT Bar Weight?

The commonly used formula is:

Weight per meter (kg) = D² ÷ 162

where D is the bar diameter in mm.

For a 10mm bar:

  • D² = 10 × 10 = 100
  • 100 ÷ 162 = 0.617 kg per meter

To find the weight of a full bar, multiply by its length:

  • 0.617 × 12 m = 7.40 kg for a 12-meter bar

This formula gives a theoretical weight. Actual bars may differ within the tolerance allowed by the standard.

How Many 10mm TMT Bars Are There in One Ton?

One ton is 1,000 kg. Dividing by the weight of one bar gives the approximate count:

Bar Length

Approx. Bars per Ton

12 meters (7.40 kg)

about 135 bars

9 meters (5.55 kg)

about 180 bars

6 meters (3.70 kg)

about 270 bars

One ton of 10mm TMT bars contains roughly 1,621 meters of steel (1,000 ÷ 0.617).

These are theoretical figures. The actual count depends on real bar weight and tolerance.

10mm TMT Bar Price in India (2026)

TMT bar prices in India change often. They are usually quoted per kg or per ton and vary by city, brand, grade and market conditions. For this reason, a fixed price is unreliable. Always ask for a current quotation.

As an indicative guide, 2026 market rates have mostly been around ₹60–₹72 per kg (roughly ₹60,000–₹72,000 per ton). Premium brands typically price higher than secondary mills.

You can estimate cost with this formula:

Cost = Weight × Rate per kg

Here is an illustration for one 12-meter bar (7.40 kg) at different rates. These are indicative rates only, not current market prices:

Factors Affecting 10mm TMT Bar Price

Several factors influence the price you are quoted:

  • Raw material cost: Iron ore, scrap, sponge iron and billet prices.
  • Grade: Higher grades such as Fe 550D may be priced differently from Fe 500.
  • Brand and manufacturing quality: Process control and testing affect pricing.
  • Order quantity: Bulk orders may attract better rates.
  • Location and transport: Freight and local demand affect the final rate.
  • GST: TMT bars fall under bars and rods of iron or non-alloy steel, and 18% GST is added to the base price
  • Market demand: Demand usually rises in the post-monsoon construction season (October to March), which can push prices up.

Uses of 10mm TMT Bars in Construction

10mm TMT bars suit light to medium reinforcement work:

  • Slab reinforcement: Main and distribution bars in residential slabs, as per design.
  • Beams: Stirrups, and sometimes hanger or secondary bars.
  • Column ties: Lateral ties that confine the main vertical bars.
  • Lintels and sunshades: Light structural elements over openings.
  • Staircases: Waist slab and distribution reinforcement in smaller spans.
  • Boundary walls and plinth work: Light reinforcement in non-heavy structures.

The bar diameter and spacing for any project should follow the structural design and the advice of a qualified engineer.

10mm TMT Bar Grades: Fe 500, Fe 500D, Fe 550 and Fe 550D

IS 1786 covers several grades. The number after “Fe” indicates the specified minimum yield or proof stress in N/mm². The “D” designation indicates enhanced ductility, meaning higher elongation requirements.

Grade

What It Means

Fe 500

Minimum yield stress of 500 N/mm²

Fe 500D

Fe 500 with enhanced ductility

Fe 550

Minimum yield stress of 550 N/mm²

Fe 550D

Fe 550 with enhanced ductility

Grade affects strength and ductility, not the bar’s nominal diameter or theoretical weight. Choose the grade according to the structural design.

What to Check When Buying 10mm TMT Bars?

Before finalising an order, verify:

  • Brand marking and rolled identification on the bar
  • Grade and nominal diameter
  • Compliance with IS 1786 and BIS marking where applicable
  • Test certificates and batch details
  • Straightness and uniform rib pattern
  • Actual weight against theoretical weight
  • Invoice details: description, grade, size, quantity, HSN code, GST and GSTIN
  • Delivery length and tolerance

If anything is unclear, ask the supplier before accepting the material.
